Ms Susan Walpole, member nominated director on the Trustee Board will soon complete her initial three year term as a director of the Motor Trades Association of Australia Superannuation Fund Pty Limited (The Trustee).
Ms Walpole is eligible for reappointment and has advised she is willing to serve a further term.
In accordance with the Constitution of the Trustee, notice is provided to all members of the Fund who wish to be considered for appointment as a member nominated director on the Trustee Board.
To be eligible for appointment, a nominee must:
have been a member of the Fund for a continuous period of not less than 12 months prior to being nominated;
have a direct, substantial and relevant connection to the retail motor trades in Australia (by virtue of employment, business interests or membership of an organisation representing the interests of Fund members) or another connection that the Board determines is significant, meritorious and valuable to the Fund;
be able to show that they can meet the ‘fit and proper’ standards required of directors of superannuation trustees; and
not be or has not been during the previous three years, a director, executive or staff member of Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) or any organisation or body related to MTAA.
Skills, knowledge and experience
The skills, knowledge and experience which an applicant can bring to the Board are taken into account in considering the fitness of an applicant to be appointed as a director on the Trustee Board. In particular, applicants who are able to demonstrate skills, knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly regarded:
insurance, (particularly group insurance) and fund administration;
commercial, financial and superannuation law;
marketing, communications and business development;
investment, particularly in a superannuation fund context;
risk management; and,
accounting and finance.
The Trustee has adopted an aspirational goal of achieving a more equitable gender balance on the Board. Accordingly, eligible female applicants with appropriate skills, knowledge and/or experience are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities and commitment required of trustee directors
Please note that the responsibilities of a superannuation trustee director and the time and commitment required are considerable; following recent legislative changes superannuation trustee directors will be subject to increased statutory duties and personal liabilities.

Consideration of Applications
Applicants who are short-listed will be provided with a Nomination Kit, which includes a copy of the Trustee’s Fit and Proper Standard, indicates the amount of time and commitment required, outlines the degree of responsibility associated with the role and a gives a general overview of the management and operation of the Fund. They will also be asked to provide detailed information and documentation to enable the Trustee to undertake a comprehensive assessment of their fitness and propriety.
Upon receipt of all required documentation, short-listed applicants will be independently assessed and ranked according to their capacity to meet the Trustee’s eligibility and ‘fit and proper’ requirements as well as the skills, knowledge and experience they would bring to the Trustee Board. The independent assessment and ranking is provided to a committee of the Trustee Board, which after taking account of the independent assessment, determines the applicant to be recommended to the Trustee Board for appointment.

The formal appointment of the successful applicant is made by the Trustee Board.
